Issues
Afghanistan Clearly it is an occupation and not a war. America cannot sustain the strategy it has used in this country for 8 long years without further devastating our economy, and while Bin Laden and Al Queda have safe haven in Pakistan, the U.S. bombs innocent civilians, and Kabul has a corrupt leader in Harmid Karzai (installed by the U.S.), we cannot win the hearts and minds of the Afghan people with a military strategy alone, if at all. Afghanistan is known as the "Graveyard of Empires."
Budget Deficit and National Debt Seek a Balanced Budget with a surplus, and use the surplus to pay down the National Debt. A higher Tax-Rate on the wealthiest Americans will increase the revenue to the Treasury, leading to Balanced Budget and Surplus. When the economy is strong, revenue to the treasury increases. When the wealthy are taxed at higher rates, the revenue increases more.
Campaign Finance Reform Money does not equal Free Speech. Corporations are not people. Until the big-money is taken completely out of elections, reform is not possible. McCain-Feingold has been a complete failure.
Civil Liberties As a nation, we must always work to protect the rights granted all persons in the U. S. Constitution.
Crime and Punishment Seek a fair and just system based on equality, doing away with the disparities that exist between the rich and the poor. Thomas Cahill of Columbia University says, "when every inmate on Death Row is poor, are we to believe that wealthy people do not commit Capital crimes?"
Defense America must and should always defend itself against enemies, foreign and domestic, but should never create alliances and involve itself in foreign conflicts that entangle us in debt, controversy, and ruin our national moral standing at home or abroad.
Economy A fair and balanced economy serves the "common good" that our Founders believed in and set down as Law.
Education America has always believed in and provided "free public" education for our citizens, and we have prospered for it. All free public education should be funded by Federal, State, and County sources, but should always be carried out and controlled by "local" communities.
Election Reform We believe the President should be elected by direct vote. Political parties should not be allowed to control elections through the Electoral College, and Federal, State and Local laws that make it impossible for free people to be heard. In the January 1922 issue of the Progressive magazine, Senator George W. Norris wrote, "On election day, the voter is thoroughly disenfranchised."
Employee Free Choice Act Corporations in America oppose Unions because whenever people can join together, they pose a threat to corporate profits. Unions do not harm the economy, rather they strengthen the workers rights, lead to living wages, and help provide rights to people who would otherwise be ruled by and trampled on by the wealthy. We support the passage of the Employee Free Choice Act.
Energy Independence America can only succeed and prosper in the 21st Century by investing in and achieving Energy Independence. Alternative sources of energy must be sought, and can lead to energy independence for America when the stranglehold of the corporate oil and coal companies is dismantled.
Ethics and Accountability Hold everyone in the Government and in the Private sector accountable, and insist on the highest level of ethical behavior from our Public Servants. Ethics violations, crimes, and misconduct must be punished.
Entitlements Bring Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid to a sustainable place today and for the future.
Foreign Policy A sound foreign policy should be based on defense of the U. S., friendships with all other Nations, and no entangling alliances.
Free / Fair Trade Insist on Fair Trade with all Nations. Today, the United States continues to allow trade-deficits that harm our workers and our economy.
Globalization Our world has had this idea for hundreds of years. Today as always, it has been a policy that has sought to enhance the wealthy, dominate resources, and keep workers enslaved and impoverished.
Gun Rights / The Second Amendment The Second Amendment, specifically guarantees "the right to keep and bear arms," so that we may have "a well regulated militia necessary to the security of a free state."
Health Care Reform We support HR676, The Expanded and Improved Medicare For All Act. The call for Universal Health Care has been 105 years in the making, begun by Progressive Republican Theodore Roosevelt in 1904. Every Wealthy Industrial Nation has a form of National Health Insurance except America. Medical Care is a Basic Human Right, not a commodity to sell.
Human Rights Work for Human Rights here in America as well as abroad. Lead by example, so every Nation sees we are upright and moral in all of our affairs.
Immigration We support enforcement of all existing Immigration Laws created in 1986 under Ronald Reagan on Employers who break the law, amnesty for those Illegal Immigrants who have been in America for many years, and a humane treatment of any and all Immigrants who were led here to work in and advance our Economy. We also support increasing Border Patrols, and pushing our neighbor Mexico to create an Economy that is fair, just, and supportive of its' citizens.
Iran America should open Diplomatic discussions with Iran, and always be sure of the Nuclear Deterrence we have over all nations. When discussing this issue, Americans need to know our history of meddling in the affairs of Iran, as well as our support of the overthrow of the Democratically elected government of Iran in 1953, and the installation of the Shah.
Iraq America was lied to about the reason to go to war in Iraq, and all crimes committed by our leaders must be prosecuted so that we may never find ourselves in a similar situation. What was sold as a war, has been an illegal overthrow of a sovereign nation, and a 6 plus year occupation of a foreign land.
Israel We have always been, and will always be a great friend with Israel. With friendship comes responsibility and accountability. While we support Israel in her struggles in the Middle East, we do a disservice to ourselves and the world by accepting or condoning her Human Rights violations and War crimes. This issue is not clear cut like we are led to believe. In Israel, nearly half of their population is against their own countries behavior.
Labor Workers rights have always been, and continue to be at the forefront of all "Progressive" thought. We must always work to protect the weak from the hand of the tyranny of the wealthy.
Mass Media The Mass Media in America is controlled by corporations who have no interest in reporting the truth. The Fairness Doctrine and Localism need to return to America after a 30 year absence. The decline in our economy can be attributed to the Reagan administration's war on America. The Mass Media only uses the airwaves that are owned by Americans, not the networks, or their companies.
Net Neutrality We must ensure free access to all Americans on the World Wide Web.
Pakistan This country is a sovereign nation, and certainly not our ally. We have no business being in or bombing targets in Pakistan. Both the United States actions in this country, and the military rule in Pakistan, lead to the increase of terrorism.
Poverty With the highest rate of Children living in poverty in the industrialized world, we need to refocus our efforts and fight the War On Poverty. Americans need to stop listening to politicians in all parties who use the poor as wedges to divide, while the wealthy are walking away with our tax dollars, and devastating our economy.
Regulation Article I, Section 8 of the U. S. Constitution grants the authority to the Legislative Branch to "regulate commerce with foreign Nations and among the States." America is collapsing domestically because of the idea's of de-regulation propagated on it by the wealthy elites, and the false sectarian beliefs of the ideological religious and conservative leaders among us that have controlled the halls of our Government, and Major Media Communications for the past 30 years. We as a Nation need to return to the regulation of commerce to protect all Americans from the power of the wealthy. America not only needs a return to the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 that regulated Banks and the Financial industry, but strict enforcement of all existing laws must be carried out. The Derivatives market needs to be declared illegal, or at a minimum, regulated and taxed.
Taxes America needs to go back to the tax rates on the wealthy that were put in place to pay for WWII. Every country that has high tax-rates, also has the highest per capita standard of living. With a National Debt of over $11.5 Trillion, it is not only irresponsible, but criminal that the wealthy do not pay their share of taxes. Theodore Roosevelt said, "the wealthy should pay very high taxes, as they benefit more from the freedom this country provides them."
The Courts The Courts represent the Judicial Branch of our Government. A Judiciary that is Just, will rule what is in the interest of all, not the few. Rulings that grant corporations the status of a person is not only wrong, it gives the corporations a totalitarian control over everyone. Our courts should protect the fundamental rights of minority groups against the tyranny of the majority.
War On Drugs The "War on Drugs" has been a failure in America. We need to spend more on Rehabilitation, and less on Incarceration, and fruitless battles to stop the flow of drugs into America. Decriminalization of Marijuana is also a necessary step. The legalization of Marijuana would do away with criminal records for users, and many deaths from crime violence, as well as huge profits for criminals. In a society where Tobacco and Alcohol (both legal) lead to large scale annual death and destruction, outlawing Marijuana (a medicinally prescribed legal substance in some states), is ridiculous, and bad policy.
